Assisted Living (Spring, 2011)

Assisting Resident

Beginning in the spring of 2011, Derrick Community Development & Human Services will be opening an Assisted Living center for people who need support with the activities of daily living but wish to live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Residents in assisted living centers are not able to live by themselves but do not require the constant level of care provided in nursing homes. We will offer help with activities such as eating, bathing, dressing, laundry, housekeeping, and assistance with medications. Essentially, assisted living is an intermediate level of long-term care.

Derrick Assisted Living will offer a lifestyle that will be familiar to our residents and provide them with structured and comprehensive activities that they can learn from and relate to. Our residents will have a choice of days that are quiet and serene or filled with a wide range of activities. They will enjoy a wide range of recreational activities including gardening, board games, individualized exercise programs and arts and crafts. We will provide a change of pace with frequent outings to local malls and casinos, weekly bingo nights, and musical entertainment. Alzheimer and dementia residents will enjoy specific activities to stimulate their minds. We will encourage our residents to participate in community events and activities, meet and share their interests with others and explore new areas of interest. As needed, we will provide guidance in appropriate social behavior by offering social reinforcement skills to all residents and provide training and assistance in areas such as eating, personal grooming, hygiene, dressing and other daily living skills.

Derrick Assisted Living will serve adult men and women that may have mental, social, age-related and developmental challenges. On admission, we will create an individualized service plan for each resident detailing the personalized services to be provided by our professional staff. Each service plan will be updated frequently to provide appropriate care for the changing needs of our residents.
